Cyclist Dooring Prevention
‘Dooring’ is an accident type where an occupant inadvertently opens the door of a parked car into the path of a cyclist approaching from behind. From 2023, Euro NCAP rewards cars which have systems designed to prevent such accidents. Some points are awarded to systems which simply inform the car’s occupants of the presence of an approaching cyclist. Points are also available to systems which actively warn the occupants not to open the door because a cyclist is approaching. But maximum points are reserved for systems which physically prevent the door from being opened until the cyclist has passed safely. Cars require rearward-looking sensors to detect approach cyclists in good time.

Tests are conducted using Euro NCAP’s cyclist target moving at 15km/h on a path which is one meter from the side of a stationary car.
