Based on dummy readings in the dynamic tests, the Golf Sportsvan scored maximum points for its protection of the 1½ year infant. In the frontal test, forward movement of the head of the 3 year dummy, sat in a forward-facing restraint, was not excessive although neck forces indicated only fair protection for that part of the body. The passenger airbag can be disabled to allow a rearward-facing child restraint to be used in that seating position. Clear information is provided to the driver regarding the status of the airbag and the system was rewarded. All of the restraints for which the car is designed could be properly installed and accommondated in the car.

The bumper provided good protection to pedestrians' legs in all areas tested, and scored maximum points. However, the front edge of the bumper was poor in all areas and scored no points. Protection provided to the head of a struck pedestrian was predominantly good or adequate with poor values recorded only on the stiff windscreen pillars.

The Golf Sportsvan has electronic stability control as standard equipment. A seatbelt reminder is also standard for the front and rear seats. A driver-set speed limitation device is available as an option. It is expected to be fitted on the majority of cars sold so qualified for assessment, and met Euro NCAP's requirements for systems of this type. An autonomous emergency braking system is also available as an option. As it is not standard equipment, its AEB City (low speed) functionality was not assessed but its higher-speed function (AEB Inter-Urban) fulfilled Euro NCAP's fitment requirements and performed well. A lane keeping system is available as an option but is not expected to be sold in sufficiently high numbers to qualify for assessment.

The passenger compartment of the Golf Sportsvan remained stable in the frontal impact and the protection of the passenger dummy was good for all parts of the body. Dummy readings showed good protection of the knees and femurs of the driver and passenger. VW demonstrated that the same level of protection would be provided to occupants of different sizes and to those sat in different positions. In the side barrier test, protection of all body areas was good and the Golf Sportsvan scored maximum points. In the more severe side pole test, dummy readings of chest compression demonstrated marginal protection for this part of the body. Protection against whiplash injury in the event of a rear-end collision was good for the front and rear seats.
